What's a tilt plate fifth wheel hitch?
A TILT PLATE style of fifth wheel hitch can give 4-way pivoting to help you hook up your trailer. It is a good choice for most, but not all, hitching situations (it is best when both the trailer and truck are on level ground, or as close to level as possible.) The locking mechanism in tilt plate hitches do not tilt with the head; instead the mechanism remains stationary while only the king pin and tilt plate move.
By contrast, a fully articulating head moves with the motion of the trailer, not the tow vehicle, for a smoother ride on rough roads. The locking mechanism in articulating heads moves side to side with the king pin, so it is easier to hitch up on uneven terrain.
The Next Generation of Fifth Wheel Hitches
